“Let’s Go together to Appreciate the Sea of Reeds”
An Ecological Trip to Chongming Island in Autumn
Chongming Island, China’s third largest island and the world’s largest estuary alluvial sand island, is situated at Yangtze estuary and described as “Gateway of Yangtze, Fairy land in East Sea”. The Island, endowed with clear water and refreshing breeze, is surrounded by a “Green Wall” formed by the reeds growing up densely along the beaches. As sand beaches are good for reed growth, the reeds grow rapidly and luxuriantly around the island, forming even several kilimeters wide reed belts along the north and southeast coasts of the island. Walking in these vast reed belts, people may feel astray amongst a boundless forest whose magnificence even exceeds the legendary reed forest at Shajiaban of Jiangsu Province in the period of Anti-Japanese War. In autumn, the harvest season for collecting oranges, the trees in orange gardens will be loaded with big and juicy oranges, glittering with brilliant golden light.
Reach Chongming Island by bus through Yantze tunnel. Visit the farm’s orange garden to see, pick and taste the oranges. At noon, taste the special Chongming crabs and farm-flavored dishes prepared by local farmers. And then, go to Chongming Xisha Wetland Park and take a walk in the reed forest.
“Climbing Shanghai’s Only Mountain to Find Flowers of Natural Flavour”
A One-day Trip to Songjiang Sheshan Holiday Resort
Situated in the northwest part of Songjiang District, Sheshan Mountain is only 30 kilometers away from the downtown area of Shanghai city. The mountain, famous for its beautiful scenery since ancient times, possesses now a luxuriantly green forest park, a largest catholic church in the Far East (Sheshan Catholic Church), and China’s first astronomical observatory (Sheshan Astronomical Observatory) as is main landscape. The East Sheshan National Forest Park is well known for its graceful hills, dense woods and rich animal and plant resources. Chenshan Botanic Garden, located in Sheshan National Tourist Resort Area, is the largest botanic garden in East China, and the comprehensive planning of this botanic garden was carried out by the Valentine Design Group from Germany. When designing the garden, Professor Valentine and his colleagues adopted measures suiting local conditions and arranged the Botanic Garden into a layout rich in Chinese characteristics, i.e. a layout with the shape of “園” in Chinese traditional seal character. Another excellent point of the Botanic Garden is the Ore Pit Park designed by Professor Zhu Yu-fan of Qinghua University. The park is built on the site of an abandoned stone pit, and the designer, through ecological restoration and appropriate reformation of the already existing deep pools, pit bases, cliffs, structures and so on, transformed it into a beautiful park. The Botanic Garden is divided into four functional areas, such as Central Exhibition Area, Plant Cultivating Area, Five Continents’ Plants Area and Peripheral Buffer Area. The periphery of the Central Exhibition Area and Plant Cultivating Area is surrounded by a 4500 meters long plant belt, displaying a variety of typical plants from Europe, Africa, America and Australia, which are suitable for growing in this area of China.
Gather together in Shanghai’s downtown area, and then set off for Songjiang Sheshan. After arrival, the visitors will have lunch at the Green Restaurant in Chenshan Botanic Garden, and in the afternoon, go sightseeing around the garden.
