This past weekend students from all three branches of Shanghai CIIC-TLI participated in the annual travel excursion to dine on the famous Shanghai Hairy Crabs and visit beautiful Yang Cheng Lake. The one-day trip was filled with fun, learning, and friendship. Students were excited to have a chance to interact with various schoolmates who the might otherwise not have met. The group was made up of students from various ages, nationalities, Chinese language abilities, and even those students who dislike sea food, but never the less all had a great time.
The caravan of buses rendezvoused at the Hong Qiao Branch mid-morning then headed out together for a brief two-hour trip to Jin Cheng restaurant. On the bus the teachers gave a brief introduction on the history of Yang Cheng Lake. Fellow schoolmates were selected to give bi-lingual translations for students who needed some assistance.
At the restaurant, the students were treated to many other Chinese delicacies before dining on the crab. Students enjoyed tofo, fish, and Kirinchiban Beer. Finally, after a plethora of Chinese cuisine, the crabs were served. While some enjoy crab meat more than others, all can agree getting to the insides of the crab is not always the easiest of tasks. Some students and even the TLI director discovered eating crabs can be as messy as it is delicious. After dinner it was time to head outside for a brief speed boat ride through the lake of the crab farm. Then it was time to board the bus to head to Yang Cheng Lake.
The group arrived at Yang Cheng Lake just before dusk with plenty of time to explore Jin Xi, the city on the water. Before separating into smaller groups students spent time taking photos individually as well as a large group photo. In the small town students shopped for small crafts and sampled traditional snacks.
Before long it was time to return to the city, and the groups headed back to their buses. Despite heavy Shanghai traffic, the groups arrived on time at their respective locations. After a long day most students and teachers headed home to rest before classes the next day. |
